Sea Lions

by Graham Isaac

i will buy you horizons
with lighthouses, seagulls
that never get any closer,
dangerous jagged
shorelines.

you will be photographed
standing by splintered
shanties, spot albatrosses
from mastheads, laugh with
your colleagues at
sperm whales.

i will fund your first voyage
with the sales from my book,

your second with a grant i
write between shifts at
the publishing house,

your third
with my last month's rent
savings accounts, emptied
piggy banks, couch cushions.

you will name new seashells
survive starving mythic days on
rock outcroppings, buffeted by
naked waves

as you become your own biographer.
you will swim years away with sea lions.

i will write you letters
never expecting
a reply.
