Goodbye
by Wilson Diehl

You slouch
into my sofa

your spine
a parenthesis

against the
ivory cushions.

I study the
tiny buttonhole

at the
corner

of your
collar-

too small
for even

a baby’s
finger-

I seek the
corresponding

button,
finding

only loose threads.
